The sea unicorn is only a little less mysterious.
So far, how these animals – narwhals – used their long fangs there has been much speculation among scientists.
The behavior captured for the first time in the camera shows narwhal using long fangs protruding from its head to stun arctic codfish hitting them, with quick and shredded motions. This behavior immobilizes the fish, making them easier to overcome.
The scene was shot by two drones at Tremblay Sound, Nunavat in the northeastern regions of Canada, Adam Ravetch for the World Wildlife Fund Canada and researchers from Canada’s Fisheries and Oceans.
Brandon Laforest, a leading specialist on Arctic species and ecosystems with WWF-Canada, explained why they were narwhal a mysterious species.
“They do not jump like other whales. They are also very aesthetic,” Laforest said. “This is a new observation of how defense is used.”
Laforest, working with Canadian government officials, spent time to revel in the narwhal’s winter habitat. Due to remote areas where no narwals, visual confirmation of their behavior has been difficult to determine.
Three-fourths of the world’s population are in the vicinity of the Lancaster Strait, which is considered by the Canadian government as a protected area.
Although the video confirms a theory of how narwhal use their fangs, they can awso be used for oder purposes, such as punches, guns or as a echolocation tool. Laforest, however, I believe may be particularly important as sensory organs.
The defense is actually the left canine tooth protruding male heads and can grow up to nine feet. The right canine remains embedded, and there are no other projects of teeth in the inner part of the mouth; Narvales use suction instead of swallowing their entire prey. Their defenses are covered with thousands of nerve endings and pores that help narwals to feel the environment around them.
The new sequence is also significant because it shows that narwals feed on the waters where they migrate for the summer. Identifying key areas that live narwhal can help conservatives better protect animals.
One of its greatest threats is manifested in the form of industrial development. As the extraction of minerals and the increase of tourism in their habitats, they run the risk of being hit by the transport ships. The development of underwater noise also interferes with your ability to communicate underwater.
Because 90 percent of the world’s narwhal found in Canadian waters Laforest emphasized the importance of federal research to identify protected areas and create navigation routes that cause less disruption.
Climate change can also have an impact on species. They are one of the only completely ice-dependent animals, and therefore particularly susceptible to heating water.
Threats to narwhal also affect the local Inuit community, which depends on animals for food and handicrafts that support their livelihoods.
Next, researchers help identify critical areas that narwhal paren, which can help protect plans.
